Today’s Scripture: Matthew 9:35 (The Message)
35-38Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. "What a huge harvest!" he said to his disciples. "How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!"
I think it is safe to say each and every one of us at some time or another has taken care of a sick loved one. We may even take care of people we don’t necessarily love or really know because of our line of work. Our Savior was no different when He walked upon this earth! It is extremely hard for me to fathom being touched and healed by God the Son; but scripture is very clear that He healed over and over without reserve or regard for illness, injury, or social status. He wasn’t even stopped by death, as He raised several from the dead. Now wouldn’t that be a WOW moment? Stop and think about it…you are at a funeral and in walked a man people were saying was God, and He raised your loved one right up out of the casket…that is what some people experienced for real!!! It makes me shake my head just at the thought…but He healed the deaf, lame, blind, you name it…even those with evil spirits! As Christians when we take care of others we are in turn being the hands of Christ. Now granted there are times when we would gladly give up our time to love on our own sick babies, kids, spouses, parents…but what about taking care of those we haven’t gotten along with necessarily…or those we flat out don’t like, or even people we don’t know? That is when the rubber hits the road so to speak…when we are beyond our comfort zone to help another living being (made in God’s image as it states in Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.”). If we really read today’s scripture, I mean really read it and let it soak into our very being…we will first realize Jesus was heartbroken over the crowds sad state. I think it is a fair statement to say our crowds these days are probably just as confused and aimless, if not more so, than the crowds Jesus looked at while on earth. And to think the Shepherd, Christ Jesus, was right there ready to give of Himself for us. He knew the harvest for souls were ready but there were few to help. We are helping with the harvest every time we love and care for one another in Jesus name. It may be our children who have a cold, the flu, ear infection or strep throat; a neighbor who is going through a rough time with a job loss or divorce, or a mother-in-law who needs help with her bills and grocery shopping. We need to be those harvest hands for Christ, making a difference in every way we can, in His name and for His glory! People are hurting out there, are your hands reaching? Pray God will open your eyes to opportunities to be used by Him to help others in His Almighty Name!!!
