Resistant to Change...

Today’s Scripture:
He (Jesus) replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:26

Why does it seem like it is just human nature to resist change?  My daughter is terrible about even wanting to give up clothes she has outgrown, and resists rearranging the furniture because she dislikes change so much.  My grandma is pitching a fit over the changes we have had to make to her life just to keep her safety in check.  I am a creature of routine, and if it gets disrupted I am all out of sorts because it is change.  Now, these are just a few examples, some being small and others rather large.  But it does seem to have a common theme, CHANGE!!! Change can be a good thing, even a great thing; however I think change to most people equals fear.  Fear of the unknown is a scary place to be; fear of what will happen as a result of the change drives us to dig our heals in hold on to the past or even present unwilling to give the future a chance. Andre Gide said, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” This is where our faith must take over as we jump with both feet.  God sees the whole picture.  And not just our lives individually; but how each life intertwines with one another completing His perfect plan!  If we do not have enough faith to trust Him; we are the ones that forfeit our part and lose out on the blessings He had in store for us!!!

Also, change is what propels us forward through life, and thus causing us to grow.  Have you ever met a person and twenty years later they seem to be the same old person with little change?  This creates a stagnant person and life, not too different than water which is no longer flowing and becomes nothing more than a yucky pond full of green gunk and doesn’t smell all that great either.  Who wants their life to resemble a green stinky pond?  Not me, that is for sure!!! Of course life brings subtle changes, and then there are the biggies like moving, job change, birth of a child and so on, you get my point.  God is in it all, the big and the small things.  He knows it is scary for us, but as any good Father would; He coaxes us on to take that step forward, trust in Him, and stretch our faith as we grow into more of the person He knows we are meant to be!  You know it’s coming…What are you resisting in your life today?  Mine is fairly simple…my baby is one year old and my Pediatrician has delivered the news, “take him off the bottle.”  I know, simple enough, right?  But he is my last baby I will ever feed a bottle to and I’m not sure I’m ready  to pack those bottles up and move on…I want to stop time…keep him little forever…but I can’t.  Yes, now I’m crying over something as trivial as baby bottles, change.  But life must go on, and tomorrow will come whether I want it to or not!  He will grow older each day, and not packing up the bottles won’t stop time.  I must, we all must move forward trusting God has a plan much bigger than giving up clothes, moving to a retirement home, or packing up bottles…and after all – today will merely be a blink of the eye compared to eternity in heaven with our Lord and Savior!  So, let us all move on together, and have faith our God is HUGE in comparison to our resistance to change.
